JP Export Compliance Manager in Meguro, Japan

We are looking for a Japan Export Compliance Manager to join the Global Trade Services team based in our headquarters in Tokyo, Japan, to support a large scale export program which spans all operations, including international shipping exports from our website to customers, as well as equipment for internal operations for all our businesses.

You will be the primarily person responsible for all Japan export operations, and ensure proper integration with various business stakeholders from each business unit, and enhance strong relationships to accelerate and drive exports. This role includes managing business priorities, defining risks, and providing risk mitigation solutions. We expect various new projects which will require cooperation with business partners across the globe, requiring strong leadership skills, and creative solutions for new problems in uncharted areas. The candidate must have advanced professional skills that cater to an international environment.

Duties will include managing export control classification processes for the entire Amazon catalog, including periodic auditing and PDCA, as well as the creation and upkeep of a robust Internal Compliance Program (ICP) for future exports of controlled goods.

Principle Duties:

  • Provide export classification/ruling guidance to programs that include controlled goods

  • Provide overall Japan Export control regulatory guidance to mitigate risks for various programs

  • Maintain existing and create new export classification processes, and ensure they are enforced

  • Work with Amazon’s Global Trade Services team across the globe to execute strategy, seek automation opportunities, and leverage new technologies still in development

  • Work with Amazon’s internal technology teams to develop creative and best-in-class Trade Compliance solutions that scale

  • Leverage big data sets to track metrics and continuously provide Export Compliance improvements at Amazon

  • 10+ years of experience with export compliance and trade controls

  • Extensive knowledge in the application of export regulations

  • Experience delivering business critical projects that are global in nature, and driving engineering and business teams toward goals

  • Strong written and oral communication skills in both Japanese and English

  • Experience leveraging technology to drive process improvements

  • Experience with Lean Six Sigma or other process improvement tools

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience

  • Trade Compliance and project management experience, preferably within the manufacturing industry

  • Ability to demonstrate sound judgment in ambiguous situations

  • Ability to turn complex compliance requirements into scalable processes

  • Ability to work under pressure

  • Strong analytical and computer skills
