NBCUniversal Entertainment Japan (“NUE”) under NBCUniversal's Home Entertainment business, Universal Pictures Home Entertainment (UPHE), markets and distributes Universal Pictures new release, catalogue, special interest and local content titles, as well as some third party product, via operations in Japan, leveraging UPHE’s international operations via 30 licensee relationships covering approximately 100 additional territories.

The NUE Local Acquisition team (“LA”), A&R/Acquisitions team, acts as a repertoire centre within NUE and acquires, creates, and produces content in Cross Media as well as Asian contents. It distributes against an all-rights model across multiple platforms domestic and internationally including theatrical, home entertainment, digital platforms and linear television.

We are looking for an outstanding senior business development professional who is passionate about content and culture to take the lead on new business initiatives within this well-established and highly successful LAQ team. The successful candidate will have exceptional commercial awareness and be able to take a project from idea stage and build it into a fully-fledged execution plan. This is an exciting role that will provide a pivotal connection between the creative, commercial and corporate worlds in the largest media company in the world.

The Commercial Director role is a senior role that works across multi-platform rights exploitation of our content to maximise profit. It provides an opportunity to work with and support the MD of Japan in a business oversight capacity and also a central point between the creative, commercial and corporate requirements. The role is threefold- being responsible for Operational Efficiency, Business Development and Content Strategy. It includes:

  • Identifying new opportunities, developing new business relationships, creating business proposals and writing bids.

  • Develop and implement commercial strategies according to company goals and objectives aiming to accelerate growth and execute on its 5 year plan

  • Understanding the value drivers of the business and identifying profitable commercial opportunities to grow revenue and market share.

  • Leverage existing and enhanced industry network to enable business development plans.


Key Responsibilities

  • Lead on managing business relationships and ensure that SMT are kept informed of market opportunities and business development.

  • Assume a key leadership role within the SMT and be seen as the business partner/responsible person for liaison with all control functions including Finance, HR and Legal

  • Establish a clear commercial strategy for the LAQ business, to develop and enhance business partners to deliver the objectives in the long-range plan

  • With the agreement from the MD and Finance Director on the key actions required to deliver the commercial strategy, lead SMT in business development activities including finding new business partners and customers and communicate the plan for implementation of the LRP actions

  • Working with HQ, MD and Finance to prepare and submit an annual operational budget for management agreement and sign off

  • Regularly review the market situation through market research and analyses to monitor the progress of implementation of commercial strategy and updating the action plans

  • Develop plan for new business strategy and growth ideas in line with business goals and objectives

  • Develop and ensure compliance as well as best practices with company procedures for the business

  • Maintaining strong working relationships with UPHE Content Group HQ and International OpCo MD’s and partners, identifying and exploring synergies and growth opportunities

  • Creation and maintenance of rigorous processes around identification of risk, and risk controls, both at bid and post contract stages.

  • Develop effective working relationships with company personnel, customers, business partners, suppliers and stakeholders in carrying-out deal making

  • Conduct deal analysis and post-mortem review of deal performance against expectations and capture learning for future improvement

  • Maintain an awareness of external factors (including competitors, and technology) developments, government business initiatives, current and proposed legislation in relation to commercial activities) which impact the business. Communicating such information and any subsequent changes to the Managing Director (MD) and Senior Management Team (SMT).

  • Collating and analysing business data pertaining to all commercial activities. Ensuring that all commercial activities meet or improve on budget, cost, volume and efficiency targets (Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)) in line with business objectives.
